Socio-economic impact
The company has had a major impact on the communities surrounding the concessions through its corporate social responsibilities, job creation, and contribution to poverty reduction. Bugambira currently employs over 1200 people across both mines. Aside from direct revenue, the entire workforce is covered by social security and basic health insurance, resulting in a significant positive socio – economic impact.
It is estimated that the total monthly cash flow from the mine to the immediate vicinity is meaningful, with an important impact on the local economy. On the mine site, local supply is used whenever possible.
Protecting the environment
At Bugambira , we are deeply committed to environmental protection and sustainability. We have developed a comprehensive action plan, which is being diligently implemented to mitigate the project’s significant negative environmental impacts. Our initiatives focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, minimizing waste, and conserving natural habitats.
In addition to addressing environmental concerns, we are also dedicated to mitigating the project’s negative socioeconomic impacts on surrounding communities.
Promoting Gender Balance
Promoting gender balance is a key part of our recruitment strategy, ensuring that women have significant opportunities in the mining sector. We are proud to have employed over 350 female miners, who are essential to our team’s success.
Our efforts to foster gender balance create a more diverse and inclusive work environment, tapping into a previously underutilized talent pool. We recognize that a diverse workforce drives innovation, improves decision-making, and enhances overall performance.
Enhancing Modern Mechanized Mining in Rwanda
Bugambira has transitioned from manual to semi-mechanized operations, boosting efficiency, reducing labor costs, and improving productivity. This shift allows for deeper extraction and increased mineral reserves.
Advanced technologies like automation and IoT sensors enable real-time monitoring and optimization. Training programs ensure employees can operate new equipment effectively.
Mechanized techniques reduce environmental impact and promote sustainable practices. Social responsibility initiatives, such as community development and employee welfare, ensure equitable benefits.
Entrepreneurship promotion
The Rwanda Development Board RDB recognized Bugambira Mines Ltd as one of the top entrepreneurs and institutions that promote both innovation and better service delivery in mining during its annual Business Excellence Awards ceremony. Following an audit, Bugambira Ltd received a certificate of compliance to Traceability Chain BGR. Bugambira Mines Ltd is also on track to be certified by ICGLR as one of the mining companies that adheres to traceability regulations
